US-VENEZUELA TENSIONS
In the US, the Trump administration believes Maduro plays a role in illegal drug supply. Maduro denies any connection to the illegal drug trade. Maduro claims that these US efforts are an attempt to overthrow him.
Since September, the US military has carried out at least 21 attacks on drug ships in the Caribbean and Pacific, killing 83 people. The US government recently deployed 11 warships and 15 thousand soldiers to the area within the scope of “Operation Southern Spear”.
It is believed that there was a phone call between Trump and Maduro. While Trump confirmed the meeting, there was no statement from the Venezuelan government. Trump is said to have told Maduro during the meeting that he should “resign immediately and leave the country.”
