State artist, ney player, marble artist and photographer Niyazi Sayın passed away in Istanbul yesterday at the age of 98. The funeral of Sayın, who was also known as “Pole of Neyzens”, will be buried today after Friday prayers at Üsküdar Valide-i Cedid Mosque. Sayın, son of Ömer Hulusi Bey from Rumelia and Necmiye Hanım from Manastır, was born on February 12, 1927 in Üsküdar. Sayın, who has been involved with music since childhood, has made significant contributions to Turkish music as a musician and ney player. Niyazi Sayın, who specializes in many fields of arts and crafts from marble to photography, from bead making to mother-of-pearl inlay, from electronics to turning, from rose making to woodworking, has succeeded in fields such as football, athletics, swimming and table tennis, and also played football in the Fenerbahçe youth team for some time. The master artist served as lecturer and head of the wind instruments department at the Turkish National Conservatory of Istanbul Technical University (ITU). At the invitation of the University of Washington, he taught Turkish and ney music with tamburi Necdet Yaşar in the United States for about a year in 1980.

Historian, President of the National Defense University, Professor Dr. Erhan Afyoncu also stated that the deceased Niyazi Sayın is the oldest living Fenerbahçe football player. Afyoncu shared the following statements about Sayın in a post on his social media account: “Niyazi Sayın, the mainstay of the ney players we lost yesterday, was the oldest living Fenerbahçe footballer. State artist, Neyzen Niyazi Sayın, passed away yesterday in Istanbul at the age of 98. The great artist of the 17th century, Osman Dede, was known as Kutbünnayi, i.e. pole of ney players, due to his outstanding talent in ney. A unique event in the history of music The late Niyazi Sayın was also known as Kutbünnayi because he was a ney player. The late Niyazi Sayın was a great artist. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also posted a condolence message to Niyazi Sayın. In his post, Erdoğan said: “I am deeply saddened by the death of ney player Niyazi Sayın, an outstanding name in the musical arts and winner of the Presidential Arts and Culture Award. May God have mercy on the late Niyazi Sayın, and I send my condolences to his family, friends and our entire artistic community.” he said.
